WebsiteI am Professor Emerita in Contemporary Portuguese and Luso-African Studies at the University of Manchester, and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. I am also a member of the Editorial Board for the Tagus-Press, Adamastor Series, at the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, at the University of Massachusetts, Darmouth. I have a particular interest in the literature and cinema of Portugal and Lusophone Africa, as well as in women’s writing and filmmaking. Recent translations include texts by Agustina Bessa Luís for the “Uma Exposição Escrita. Agustina Bessa-Luís e a Coleção de Serralves” organised in 2022 to celebrate the centenary of the novelist’s birth at the Museu Serralves in Porto, poetry by Noémia de Sousa, and participation in the Bode Inspiratório/Escapegoat project coordinated by Victor Meadowcroft. I worked as a translator on the team for The Philippine History Retrieval Project – Portugal, coordinated by Paulo Pinto at CHAM (Centro de Humanidades, Univ. Nova de Lisboa) commissioned by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines for the quincentenary of the Magellan voyage. I was also a translator on the team coordinated by Pedro Pinto (CHAM, Univ. Nova de Lisboa) for the publication, Portugal in the Sea of Oman: Religion and Politics. Research on Documents. Corpus 3.
