Jacqueline Austin

Jacqueline was born in Kent, England, a little while ago now(!) and has been living in Portugal for the last twelve years. Initially a graduate of literature (English and European) she has had a varied academic career which culminated in her gaining a PhD awarded jointly by the departments of ‘English’ and of ‘Classics and Ancient History’ of the University of Birmingham. She has also taught English professionally.

Focussing nowadays on Portugal and its culture, Jacqueline maintains a lively interest in European Portuguese, and rarely reads now in any other language. In 2020 she gained the DAPLE (PLE) qualification Level C1.

In translation as a profession she is just starting out. To date she has translated one single novel (published as an ebook), while her translation of a short story by Raul Brandão was featured in November 2024 on the Asymptote blog. She does have some projects ongoing, and looks forward to telling you something more about these in the near future.
