Jon Russell Herring

Jon Russell Herring is an early career translator and writer who lives in Navarra. He studied French and Spanish Literature (with Basque and Catalan) as an undergrad, and recently returned to literary translation. He began learning Portuguese through Skype chats in the 2020 lockdowns.

Jon has an MA in Literary Translation at UEA in Norwich. He translates from Portuguese, Spanish, Basque and Catalan.

As well as being one of the two translators on the first Queer Digital Residency at the Poetry Translation Centre in London, he was selected for the UNESCO Cities of Literature poetry translation programme in Ljubljana in 2023. He has also led translation workshops in Norfolk primary schools as part of the BCLT’s Creative Translation Ambassadors project.

His translation of Paula Galindez’s poem Hundir las manos en la Tierra was published in the Canadian journal Long Con in the summer of 2023 and that autumn, he was thrilled to come third in the Stephen Spender Prize for a collaborative translation (with PELTA colleagues) of an untitled poem by Ana Martins Marques.
