A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Ilze Duarte holds a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature and a graduate-level degree in English/Portuguese translation from Universidade de São Paulo. She is based in the U.S., where she writes short prose and translates works by contemporary Brazilian authors. Her translations of works by Marilia Arnaud and João Anzanello Carrascoza, both award-winning novelists and short story writers, have appeared in various literary magazines, including Your Impossible Voice, Ambit, Northwest Review, Exchanges Journal, and Asymptote Journal.
Ilze is a recipient of the 2024 Sundial House Literary Translation Award, which includes prize money and publication of her translation of The Book of Affects, a short story collection by Marilia Arnaud.
